In 1985, The Covington-Oxford Arts Guild and the Rockdale Arts Alliance were formed. Each group had similar goals
community outreach through monthly meetings, lectures, demonstrations, classes and art shows. The
Covington-Oxford Arts Guild, known as COAG to it's members, incorporated and organized evening art classes held
at Newton County Comprehensive High School. These classes were conducted by COAG members.
In 1987, the annual "Off the Square Art Show", was held offering a
fall venue for all artists to showcase, demonstrate
and sell their creative works. As the show began to grow in size, the location being used proved to be too small for
expansion. The show was relocated to Salem Campground and was renamed "The Southern Heartland Arts Festival".
In 1988, The Covington-Oxford Arts Guild, Inc. applied for and received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status. In 1993,
COAG, Inc. joined the Rockdale Arts Alliance to become Art Guild East, Inc. "The Southern Heartland Art Festival" began
to demand more attention from Art Guild East, Inc. board members and it was decided to change their corporate name one
last time to Southern Heartland Arts, Inc. |
